A study published this July looked at concussion in ice hockey players. The study used various designs, and among other findings, found that professional hockey players (i.e. National Hockey League players) missed an average of about 14 games in a 82 game season from a concussion. Further, the researchers calculated the cost of missed games due to concussion for professional hockey players between 2000 and 2023, which totalled nearly $386 million. The cost of concussion in professional hockey players could lead to body-checking rule changes, which have proven effective in reducing concussions among youth hockey players.
