Ankle injuries, such as ankle sprains and fractures, are one of the most common badminton injuries.
Badminton is a racquet sport often played as singles or doubles, hitting a shuttlecock or ‘birdie’ across a net. It was included in the Summer Olympics in 1992 and is governed locally by Badminton BC. Injuries to the lower extremities are most common, including sprains and fractures, as well as shoulder injuries.

There is a high incidence of Achilles tendon rupture in badminton players. Achilles tendon injuries most commonly occur at the middle or end of a badminton game.
Injuries to the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) of the knee can occur from playing badminton. ACL injuries most frequently occur from a single leg landing after an overhead badminton stroke.
Although lower extremity injuries are the most frequent, shoulder injuries and shoulder pain are also common among badminton players.
Most badminton injuries occur to the lower extremities. Overall, it is estimated that for every 1,000 hours of playing badminton, a single player of any level will sustain approximately 5 injuries. This is lower among the junior pre-elite players who have started training but are not yet competing, and higher among competitive players.

The majority of badminton injuries occur to the lower extremities. These injuries are most commonly caused by movements involving turning, changing direction, shifting weight, pivoting, twisting, and landing.
A player's knee position when they land after a jump influences the risk for anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury. There is a higher incidence of ACL injury during single-leg landing after an overhead stroke, potentially due to increased knee valgus angle and movement following the jump to return to position.
More studies are needed to determine whether the amount of training is a risk or protective factor for different badminton injuries. Research has found that players with painful Achilles tendons reported a higher weekly training load, while players with shoulder injuries trained less than uninjured players.
Suffering a previous shoulder injury can increase your risk of sustaining another shoulder injury by 50%.
